python-xlrd software package provides extract data from Microsoft Excel spreadsheet files, you can install in your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install python-xlrd
python-xlrd is installed in your system.
Make ensure the python-xlrd package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep python-xlrd *
You will get with python-xlrd package name, version, architecture and description in a table
